Exotericism (Buddhism) / Wikipedia (trans. VS 2014)

 Exotericism (Buddhism)

Exotericism is the belief in Buddhism that the teaching should be available for all individuals, as opposed to being kept secret. Antonym: Esotericism (Buddhism). Founder of the Shingon Buddhist sect, Kukai, spread the teachings as superior to previously prevelant esoteric teachings, and closer to that of the Classification of Buddha's teachings.

Kukai separated exotericism and esotericism as follows:

 Exotericism

The belief that any living being had the abilities to reach enlightenment and become a Buddha (Sakyamuni), and that this knowledge should be made available to anyone.

 Esotericism

The belief that one may only reach enlightenment and become a Buddha (Mahavairocana) through profound learning, as the truth cannot be sought out easily.

Using Kukai's interpretation of the two concepts, certain Buddhist Sutra can also be separated as such:

Exoteric Sutra - "Avatamska Sutra" or "Flower Adornment Sutra"; "Lotus Sutra"; "Prajnaparamita Sutra" or "Wisdom Sutra" (with one section omitted); "Nirvana Sutra"

Esoteric Sutra - "Mahavairocana Sutra"; "Vajrasekhara Sutra"; "Risho Sutra" or "Transcending Principle Sutra"

Saicho and his pupil Ennin set out to differentiate themselves from the Chinese Tiantai teachings, and establish the Japanese Tendai set. With the "Lotus Sutra" at its heart, the teachings were based what they considered the four main principles in Japanese Buddhism (Lotus Sutra, prayer to Amitabha, Zen Buddhism, and esoteric teachings) and enmitsu itchi (the concept that the teachings of Tendai, and esoctericism, are the correct form of Buddhism).
